Sound Therapy

Ancient Sacred Sound :  Modern Sound Therapy

Modern sound therapy has its distant roots in ancient uses of sound for ritual, ceremony and meditation across the world. There is little proof to show that sound was used in the same way that modern practitioners do today but evidence suggests that sound was used to create altered states of consciousness which can have a similar effect. My interest and research is around making connections between the use of sound in the past and how this can relate to the techniques and objectives of modern sound therapy which have developed since the 1960s.

The soundbath sessions use a range of large gongs, singing bowls and therapeutic percussion to create a rich and complex sonic tapestry which can be deeply therapeutic. Sound therapy can have a wide range of benefits and is something we need now more than ever, it is a gentle yet very effective way to look after your physical and mental wellbeing. Participative workshops are a unique way to focus on sound and resonance in the form of a range of listening meditations and sensory techniques to provide skills which can be of great benefit far beyond the session itself.

Jez Smith is a qualified sound therapist through BAST and COSH. As a partially deaf musician with over 35 years experience, he combines multi-sensory approaches to playing which focus on a deep understanding of vibration and resonance. This experience creates an immersive, meditative and restorative approach to using these beautiful instruments which is different from many other practitioners.
